Snow day on Dutchmans Lane

While the children in town might believe that snow days are fun, those of us who had to scrape icy windshields and brave slushy roads this morning may have to disagree. And according to Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction last weekend, we can expect some winter weather to continue through early March.

It may be freezing outside, but fortunately we at JFCS have a whole variety of indoor activities that will be nice and warm in the coming weeks!

Are you ready for Bagels and Bingo this weekend? This is the first event of its kind for us here at JFCS, and it will benefit our food pantry. Come out this Sunday, February 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. A can of food buys your entry to the breakfast-for-dinner buffet, and bingo cards cost one can of food per card. There will be raffles, bingo prizes, and all kinds of fun for everyone. Reservations are needed , so please contact Anita Jarboe at 452-6341.

Do you know why LinkedIn is important and how it can help your job search? Have no fear if you don’t know the first thing about it. We can help you succeed with this popular online networking tool with our two-part workshop. Sessions will be held at 3 p.m. on February 16 and 23 (both Sundays). A fee of $20 covers both sessions. To register, contact Janet Poole at 452-6341, ext. 222.

Our February Diabetes Support Group meeting will feature Kara Damon, a dietitian from Jewish Diabetes Care. She will speak about managing diabetes and will be available to answer questions you may have. The meeting is scheduled at 1 p.m. on Monday, February 17, and is free and open to the public. Contact Madri Faul at 452-6341, ext. 307, to learn more.

If you are searching for a job, we want to help you improve your results. Employment Search Jumpstart will begin on Monday, March 3, at 5:45 p.m. This workshop meets every Monday for four weeks, with a one-time materials fee of $10 for the entire cycle. For more information, please contact Janet Poole at 452-6341, ext. 222.

Our ever-popular ACT Preparation Classes will resume from March 10 through April 8. These usually fill quickly, so be sure to reserve your space early. The workshop fee of $170 includes two textbooks. To register, contact Janet Poole at 452-6341, ext. 222.

Is your favorite college student looking for summer work? Summer internships are available through Jewish Family & Career Services, the Jewish Community of Louisville and the Jewish Community Center. Positions are available in a wide variety of fields. Candidates must be Jewish, permanent residents of the Louisville area, and have completed one year of college. Contact Ellen Shapira at 452-6341, ext. 225, for more information.

Last, but certainly not least, we have a new list of Food Pantry needs for February. This month, we’re low on toiletries: shampoo, toilet paper, paper towels, soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes are all in high demand. Of course, we still have need of food, and our clients appreciate all of your donations. We are required to receive all food items in the original packaging, and we are unable to distribute goods that are past their expiration dates. We also accept gift cards and monetary donations to the Sonny and Janet Meyer Family Food Pantry Fund. Contact Kim Toebbe at 452-6341, ext. 103, if you have any questions.
